Building Christmas Cheer: Baby Cat's Cat House Tradition

Updated: Dec 1, 2024

I got Baby Cat in 2017, and like any anxious new mother, I joined a bunch of Facebook groups to be told I was doing everything wrong all the time. But I did find out about these Target Wonderland Cat Houses. Naturally, I had to have one for my precious little bebe. It has ended up being one of my favorite Christmas traditions. In the second year, I started recording the building process as a fun memory. It’s become a whole thing.

This year, it almost didn't happen. Between my work hours being cut and the election to a tighter-than-normal budget, it's been hard to get excited about anything—let alone Christmas. To top matters off, I couldn't find the Christmas Cat House in my local Targets at all, and when I went online to order it, it was almost identical to last year's build and not available anywhere near me. Sad trumpet noise.

Interestingly, November tends to be one of the hardest months of the year (bad breakups, major losses, general chaos), and building these Cat Houses tends to be an anchor point to shifting towards a Holly-er Jolly-er mindset. It was no different this year; I'd spent most of November in a funk and, even though I had ordered a Cat House from Chewy, was unmotivated to build it until the end of the month.

But we did build it, and Baby Cat loves it. Even though this year might not be the Christmas I had planned, it's still full of traditions that make me smile. Hopefully it makes you smile too.
